Sutjeska National Park

Sutjeska is Bosnia and Herzegovina 's oldest national park. Encompassing 17,500 hectares of magnificent wilderness, it is the home of Perucica, one of Europe's last primeval forests, and of Maglic mountain, Bosnia and Herzegovina 's highest peak on the border with Montenegro. The park is crossed by the Sutjeska river, which has carved deep canyons and divides Zelengora mountain from Maglic and Volujak mountains.

Park's attractions include Skakavac, 80m high waterfall, hidden deep in Perucica, and glacial lake Donje Bare set high above the Sutjeska valley, with views of the mountain peaks on the border with Montenegro.

The wildlife in Perucica is thriving. Beech trees and endemic pines tower over 60m high and, most likely visitors will catch a glimpse of brown bear, wolf, and chamois, or perhaps one of the many resident eagles soaring overhead.

The park's rough terrain assisted the locals in defeating the advancing Germans in a crucial battle during the WWII, the large stone monuments stand commemorating the victory.

The park offers a wide range of ecotourism and sports activities, from walking, trekking and fishing to more adventurous winter mountaineering, climbing and rafting. The park's facilities include a hotel, restaurants, cafés and sports centre in Tjentiste, and camping grounds.
There are also several renovated mountain huts on Zelengora.
The park and its facilities are open all year round with some limited access during the winter months.
