A Memorandum of Understanding between the Municipality of Tuzla and UNDP Bosnia i Herzegovina was signed yesterday (June 22nd) in Tuzla by the UNDP Energy and Environment Programme Analyst, Igor Palandzic, and the Mayor of Tuzla Municipality, Jasmin Imamovic. This memorandum defines future cooperation between the two institutions and further ways of assisting the Tuzla Municipality in increasing energy efficiency by donating the EMIS application (Energy Management Information System).
Systematic energy management includes strategic planning and sustainable management of Bosnia and Herzegovina's energy resources. One way to increase energy efficiency monitoring is to use the EMIS application.
Energy Management Information System is a web application for monitoring and analyzing energy and water consumption in public buildings, and a valuable tool for the systematic management of energy. The program was developed by the UNDP Croatia, and over USD 500,000 has been invested in the development of the application.
Mr Imamovic expressed particular satisfaction that the Tuzla Municipality is the first municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina to monitor energy consumption by using the EMIS application. Through this cooperation the Municipality of Tuzla will get a useful tool that will help Tuzla become a greener city.
Mr Palandzic emphasized that by using information obtained through the EMIS analysis, energy management experts would be able to reach energy efficiency solutions that could lead to financial savings in local communities, which in some cases could reach up to 10% of their annual budgets.
The area of energy efficiency ranks high on the list of priorities of the European Union. Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a potential candidate for the European Union membership, is required to endorse a number of legal acts in order to be able to fulfil its obligations towards the EU accession. The use of application such as EMIS could be one of the first steps towards a greener and an energy efficient country.
